• Winner announced: March 22, 2012 at the BLN Making it Mobile Forum, London, UK.
• Entry fee: Free.
• mobiThinking verdict: This competition is free and ridiculously easy to enter. Fill out your details and explain in 100 words how your business helps other companies make money from mobile. But it is only for privately-held companies that are making money. In 2012 it attracted 59 entrants, which is pretty good for an awards newcomer. From these 12 were selected to present their product or service during the Making it Mobile Forum (London, March 22, 2012) in front of the conference audience all of which is good for finding potential investors, partners and customers – making this an attractive format. The winner was announced at the end of the forum.

Making it Mobile (MiM) Award - winners and finalists

The following twelve companies pitched at Money in Mobile Forum (March 22, 2012, London, UK) in front of the judges and conference audience to win the MiM Award. The Winner in a close run competition was Blippar.

1st Place: Blippar

Entry summary: Blippar is a markerless image-recognition platform for smart devices which represents a revolutionary new ‘medium’ - enabling brands and media owners to convert all physical print or branded collateral - into instantaneous, interactive ‘experiences’. A QR code-killer at the basic end of its functionality and an augmented reality experience at the other, blippar converts ‘push’ print into pulled, interactive content experiences to generate more revenue for the brand/ media owner. For consumers, blippar offers an engaging, instantaneous opportunity to ‘play’ with their printed media and brands and receive valuable information from them (e.g. a recipe, coupon, cinema or travel schedule).



2nd Place: Aurasma

Entry summary: After integrating Aurasma into their marketing campaign, mobile purchases to the John Lewis Clearance website increased 46 percent. Aurasma allows companies to achieve higher levels of engagement with their marketing. By bridging the void between offline and online materials Aurasma boosts mobile purchases across the entire marketing mix. Direct marketing materials, packaging, POS, print campaigns, billboards and catalogues can all be set up as trigger images, allowing purchases to be made through mobile devices by viewing materials ‘in-app’. It is even possible to set up ‘window shops’ where customers can purchase items through their mobile by viewing them in shop windows.



3rd Place: Paythru

Entry summary: paythru is an m-commerce Payments Platform Provider. Our solutions are designed to revolutionize mobile payments by helping businesses:
- Use innovative payments to create personalized m-commerce experiences that increase value and loyalty with technology which works across all mobile phones
- Implement universal payments as a strategic enabler of m-commerce by simplifying mobile access to an entire spectrum of payments
- Deploy m-commerce to reduce the risk of payment fraud using mobile solutions that comply with PCI DSS: the top finance industry security standards


Finalist: Fonleap

Entry summary: At Fonleap, we believe that your entire digital environment should be accessible across all your devices, as a seamless, continuous experience. Our first product, PocketVM, makes it possible to work on any computer as though it was your own, without relying on remote access. Your mobile device is used to transport the state of your desktop from one computer to another. You can leave one computer, and can resume on a different one, with your desktop, files and importantly - your applications exactly as you left them. Furthermore, all your documents are accessible on your phone/tablet, even without internet connectivity.



Finalist: Cella Energy

Entry summary:
Entry summary: Longer lasting batteries. Consumers want endless power. Battery life is the most disliked feature on portable devices. Convergence of device operation has worsened the power problem. Consumers also dislike the clutter and complication of power cords and chargers. Cella is making hydride cartridges that can power devices 3x longer than existing lithium-ion batteries. A snap-in design means a device is back to instant power. Want one?


Finalist: Cogenta

Cogenta has created a world leading mobile shopping and messaging platform that enables brands to create a compelling mobile experience. The platform contains unique shopping data curated specifically for mobile customers, has rich functionality and is easy to build on through highly scalable APIs. The platform is an integral part of the O2 Wallet application due for release in the next 8 weeks and has been tested to support millions of users. The platform also provides brands with a unique targeted messaging service delivering offers in real time based on consumers shopping behavior. We’re live in the UK & US.


Finalist: Mobile Future Group

Entry summary: Mobile Future Group is a technology company that specializes in mobile customer acquisition for brands on a global basis. Linking Mobile is the UK's first global mobile affiliate network, delivering sales and sign-ups for blue chip advertisers such as Peugeot, O2, Ford, Fitness First and Marks and Spencer. Clients are currently live in over 60 countries. AD-X is a unique piece of software that allows brands to track app downloads from click, to download to in-app action globally. Global clients include Hotels.com, Priceline, Coca-Cola and M&CSaatchi.


Finalist: On Device Research

On Device Research has delivered 1 million surveys across 50 countries, using mobile internet to access consumer opinions any time or place. Through our proprietary technology and skill at creating mobile surveys we transcend geographical barriers, delivering meaningful, targeted data in a quick and cost effective way. This enables clients to commission projects they’ve never been able to do before, especially in emerging markets. As we move towards a ‘mobile only’ society, web enabled devices are becoming the only way to reach out to every continent in one research project; providing valuable data to clients with wide-reaching business implications.


Finalist: Hailo

Entry summary: Every day in major cities around the world, consumers waste a million hours hunting for taxis, and drivers leave tens of millions of pounds on the table due to inefficiency in the market. Hailo is a commerce network that matches passengers and licensed taxi drivers, using a tool which helps to make cabbies’ days more sociable – and profitable. Hailo makes sure people are never more than two taps away from a licensed taxi, and that cabbies get more passengers when they want them.



Finalist: Nobex Technologies

Entry summary: Nobex Radio is a leading radio listening application for Smartphones, with over 7M users. The latest version leverages chat capabilities and allows listeners to interact with each other while listening to the same station, and allows the station to interact with its listeners. This provides the station with a much needed business model around the one-to-one streaming model, which differs from their traditional broadcast, one-time-many model.


Finalist: SwiftKey

Entry summary: SwiftKey enables businesses to embrace mobile technology by easing the strains and stresses of accurate touchscreen text entry. Using breakthrough AI technology, SwiftKey products significantly boost typing productivity on mobile devices by creating personalized language profiles that turn sloppy typing into perfect prose. The SwiftKey consumer app is among the most popular global apps on Android and won ‘Most Innovative Mobile App’ at MWC’s GMA awards this year. We partner with major OEMs to help differentiate their devices, and provide enterprise productivity solutions, such as our medical note-taking product, which can boost productivity by up to 60 percent.



Finalist: Bankin’

Entry summary: Bankin’ is simply the best mobile money manager with a European ambition. Created by 3 complementary founders, already downloaded more than 80,000 times in only 4 months, daily used and rated 4.5/5 stars with more than 2,300 reviews on the AppStore, the Bankin’ app is already a success in France. As Bankin’ categorizes all spending automatically (£200 Foods, …), users benefit from innovative features, but additionally Bankin’ provides a very powerful targeting tool to brands with high values leads sell-off. Soon available on any devices across Europe, we target 2.5 Million users and 17 million revenues in 2016.
